In his personal journal, Marcus Aurelius wrote often about his experience as a leader and what made a person a good leader and a good member of society. He wrote about how so many people debated the characteristics of a “good man” but the debate only delayed their ability to be a “good man”.
He famously wrote, “Waste no more time arguing what a good man should be. Be one.” This message is a great lesson on how we can move through our own work. We talk all the time about what is great teaching, and what are great leaders, but we fail to look at the day before us and realize that we have the opportunity to do better right now.
So, waste no more time arguing about what makes a great educator. Be one.
