Go Together
When it comes to change and improvement, I have had to work on my patience. Early in my career, I was eager to get change to happen, and often it did because I was persistent, and others were fine with letting the change happen. It was rewarding to see SIT teams develop, or school-wide behavior systems start to take shape, but it was also frustrating as they seemed to lose momentum when I left.
It took me a long time to fully understand the idiom, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” Internally, I still feel the pressure and impatience of my youth, but now I can approach change with less frenzy.
In a recent blog, Seth Godin wrote that “a long time is not the same as never.” This was a great reminder that came at just the right time.
We all are a part of districts on the move. We’re in the middle of change that we want to be instant, but is guaranteed to fade unless we do it right. We all need to remember that once innovation takes hold, no one will remember how long it took.
