Feeling Productive
There are some days when I feel more productive than others. I am always active, and always doing things. However, my activity is often driven by urgency and the daily whirlwind. This has value because it defines my work, but it often is not the most satisfying work.
To feel productive, I must also do work that I see as important and make progress in an area of need. I have found that I do this best when I pick one thing to focus on for the day. One thing that I hope to work on in the gaps of the whirlwind.
This singular focus in the rush of the day ensures that consistent progress is made every day to address a need. Each afternoon before I leave the office, I think about what my one thing for the next day will be and write it on a sticky note and put it somewhere I will see it first thing in the morning.
Some days I’m more successful at completing this item than other days, but almost every day I’m at least able to make meaningful progress on something that will make things better for my organization.
